Early stage of prostate cancer is generally treated with surgery which is called radical prostatectomy. In this surgery, the prostate is removed completely along with the seminal vesicle and the lymph nodes. Though there are not many post operative complications in this kind of surgery, yet after prostate surgery a person may feel two most common problems- urine leakage or incontinence (UI) and sexual dysfunction.

Urine leakage or incontinence (UI): this is a problem very pathetic for persons who undergo such surgery. This means uncontrolled or involuntary urine leakage from the bladder. A person may wet his clothes, bed, furniture without any sense of having urination. The leakage may also happen if he coughs, changes his positions, receive jerks, walking forcefully and alike. This happens due to deficiency of intrinsic urethral sphincter. This band of striated muscles prevent urine from coming out of the bladder. But during the time of surgery, it may be hurt or may be damaged due to which its voluntary control gets lost and the leakages of the urine continues.

Sexual Dysfunction: Now this has many areas of problem. The person may become infertile and the chances are 95 %. This is because the seminal vesicles are cut and the sperms don’t get the medium to survive in the vagina as well as the fluid on which they swim. Secondly the impotency. Though its very rare  yet in that case it is also seen that the person has erectile dysfunction and cannot have sex willingly. These factors also depend on the age of the person. If he is above sixty then the above said is natural to happen but if he is between 45-60 there is a possibility of its happening. It’s like 1 out of 18 cases.

Minor post operative side effects are pain in the abdominal area, pain in the incision area, problem in walking for two or three days and some other problems but they are temporary and are cured with the help of medicines.
