Prostate cancer is the disease of the uncontrolled growth of the prostate cells that affect other organs one after another. This ailment is regarded as one of the most dreaded disease of the elderly in USA and 1 in every 6 individuals has the vulnerability to infest it.

There are various treatments for this cancer and they are applied based on complete diagnosis and evaluation by the doctors. One of the treatments is called prostate cancer hormone therapy. It’s used to stop the growth of the cancer cells and shrink them to death by starvation.

Once the cancer cells start growing in the prostate, they need the help of a hormone called dihydrotestoterone (DHT). This hormone is produced by prostate gland and acts as a food for the cancer cells to grow and multiply. On the basis of this theory, hormone treatment is applied for treating prostate cancer by stopping the supply of the required hormone to the cancer cells.

In prostate cancer hormone therapy, medications or other surgical methods are applied to block the supply of the DHT to the cancer cells. This in turn keeps the cells starved. As a result, they cannot grow and ultimately die due to shrinking. In the hormonal therapy, the path of producing the hormone DHT is disturbed and as a result it becomes deficient for the cancer cells. The surgery carried out for hormone therapy is called orchiotectomy where testicles are removed that helps in synthesizes of DHT. And, medications include antiandrogens like flutaminde that blocks the passage of the testoterones.

But this method of treatment is not that much effective in the sense that after one or two years, the cells become adaptive and are able to grow without the help of the DHT. Hence, the hormonal theory is applicable to those patients undergoing radiation therapy so that the cancer cells don’t come back again.
